'James Dean rolled out of bed Friday morning and caught a bus near Beverly and Western, transferred to a Red Line train and reported for work.

Marilyn Monroe was supposed to join him, but she didn't show.

Earlier in the week, I had spotted James and Marilyn working together.

I wondered what their story was. Were they a couple? Did they just get off a bus from the Midwest with big dreams?

James Dean, whose real name is Gerard Christian Zacher, dialed Marilyn but got a recording saying the service had been cut off.

'I know she was excited about coming,' he said, concerned about what might have happened to her. No, they're not a couple. Just friends who have discovered that more tourists flock to them when they stand next to each other.

We crossed the boulevard with Zacher in character. When I first saw him, earlier in the week, he was James Dean in 'Giant,' but on this day he was dressed for 'Rebel Without a Cause.' Cuffed jeans, T-shirt, light jacket and fake cigarette. A method actor, he never broke character the entire time. Very cool, and moody, too, like a young man whose parents were tearing him apart.

Zacher is a little guy who could pass for 25.
Zacher, who has worked as Luke Skywalker, Peter Pan, the Grinch and Beetlejuice, and Freddy Krueger, among others.

'There were times when I wanted to give up,' he said.

But he had grown up in Illinois determined to become an actor, staging plays in his backyard as a grade-schooler. It took him a little longer to get to Los Angeles than he had hoped, and his first jobs were never part of the dream that brought him here.

After arriving in LA, he worked as a Disney store clerk and then transferred to attractions and performing at Disneyland. He worked on the Jungle Cruise and in the Enchanted Tiki Room, Fantasyland, and Toon Town there for four years. Then he found Hollywood Boulevard, which later led to starting his own party and event entertainment business.

'Technically, it's acting if you're out there for the right reasons,' he said, remembering his Hollywood Blvd days. 'But I came to the Boulevard to get beyond the Boulevard, if that makes any sense.'

At the time, he had no car, no agent, and no prospects.

'I told myself to just hang in there a little longer. I'm going to either make it or die trying.'

Then a documentary filmmaker showed up with a camera. The plan was to make a short on the lives of a few film character tribute artists, but he quickly decided there was a full-length feature on the odd cast of look-alike performers and the subculture.

'Gerard is the lead and the best,' said the filmmaker, who hooked up with him and found that he was a natural in front of the camera, with a story both tragic and inspirational.

The film is about the reincarnation of famous characters, and he said it was just selected by the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Zacher is also featured in an upcoming documentary [by Catchphrase Entertainment] which is about uber-fans of legendary movie characters such as Luke Skywalker. He is also the star of another independent movie with a third filmmaker. He worked on all of these simultaneously, with four different film crews following him everwhere everyday from the time he woke up till the time he went to sleep.

'I think it might be starting to turn around,' says Zacher, who, like Skywalker, doesn't know who his biological father is. He was raised by adoptive parents but will spend the upcoming holiday with his biological mother, who lives in Florida.

He had searched for her unsuccessfully for years, and then she found him recently and introduced him to three half brothers who have encouraged him not to give up on acting.

After our coffee, we walked across the street. Then, Zacher leaned against a wall, lifted the fake cigarette to his lips and paid homage to the actor who once said:

'Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.'

EMPIRE MAGAZINE ARTICLE:

By Simon Braund

[For Those Who Are Not Familiar With Empire Magazine, It Is Literally The UK'S Leading Entertainment Magazine, And Is Considered A Very Important Entertainment Industry import here in Los Angeles.]

gerard_james_dean_eden_1_sessions_2_1.jpg

The very day Malerie Grace made her Hollywood debut as Marilyn Monroe, decked out in vintage Seven-Year-Itch-era white dress, immaculate makeup and iconic blond wig, she was approached by a man. Not that there is anything unusual in that when you're pn public, effecting a more-than-fair approximation of the most potent sex symbol ever to roam the earth. What was unusual, however, was that this particular man was not a camcorder-wielding mid-westerner with an Idaho-sized ass and a thing for dead blondes. No, this was half-pint Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney's son Jimmy who was so transfixed by the billowy-skirted vision before him that he insisted on taking 'Marilyn' to dinner, regaling her with stories of the genuine article who was, apparently, a regular visitor chez Rooney back in the day. As you'd expect, Grace (who also does Audrey Hepburn and Elvira) takes no little delight in recounting this anecdote; it is, after all, a tremendous compliment.

It's also a story echoed by her friend and fellow actor, Gerard Christian Zacher, who can be seen in various guises ranging from James Dean to Luke Skywalker to Beetlejuice to The Grinch, and many others. On the evening in question he was appearing as Freddy Krueger, one of his most celebrated character and one, Empire can confirm, he performs with energetic menace and much slashing of talons, particularly if there's a limo-load of shrieking Valley Girls in the vicinity.

"Robert Englund happened to be going to a premiere," recalls Zacher. "I didn't spot him but my friend Mitchell did and he literally dragged me over to him. I've met celebrities before but I was really nervous. I was thinking, What if he hates it? I'll never be able to do Freddy again on princible. He looked at me and was like, 'Sheesh. I wish I had my camera.' He pulled my hat down ever so slightly and said, 'Now you're perfect.'"

On an unprecedentedly rainy Friday in Hollywood – braved only by a forlorn looking Darth Vader – Empire met up with Zacher, Grace, and Mitchell Schonberner (he of the Robert Englund incident whose alter egos include Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Jason Voorhees) at Audrey's, a bijou Audrey Hepburn-themed coffee shop well worth a visit if you're in the area. It's these actors' regular hang-out. Sadly, due to the rain, Empire is denied the spectacle of the performers in costume sipping a gunpowder green tea and splitting a bran muffin. In fact, Mitchell is the only one not in mufti today, gamely turning out as Solo despite the inclement weather. Which is a shame since when they are in costume, they're something to see. They distinguish themselves from the run-of-the-mill lookalikes with authentic , often expensive costumes they assemble themselves and, where necessary, elaborate makeup – when Zacher appears as Freddy Krueger, for instance, it takes him over two hours to put his face on; when Grace does Marilyn, she claims, the transformation is so complete even her friends don't recognize her.

"I started [doing characters] about five years ago," says Zacher. "I had a friend who was doing work out here and I kind of got introduced to it from that. I had just finished working at Disneyland and it looked perfect to me. You could be a working actor every day; I pursue acting through the normal routes, but this is a little something extra, like an internship." Surmising that the scene could do with some livening up and grand theatrics, Zacher started as Bram Stoker's Dracula and progressed from there. "I thought there was room for some more variety," he says, "something a little more theatrical. And I didn't want to come out here looking like a trick-or-treater, I wanted to be accurate and professional about it."

It's this insistence on professionalism, taking what they do seriously and putting on a performance that sets the real Hollywood actors apart from the drug-store-costumed cup-shakers, and it's blatantly obvious who is there to put on a performance and who is there to hustle for change.

"I had just finished doing a lot of musical theater," says Grace. "I actually got introduced to this work by my boyfriend Michael. I'd just got off a show and [doing characters] felt like I was still working, practicing my art. And I love it. Once I get into the costume I can't act any other way than as Marilyn: my voice changes, my laugh changes, my mannerisms are all hers."

"I started about five years ago in New Orleans," says Schonberner. "It's a little different down there, a lot of mimes and a lot of guys standing still. Thing is, I like dressing up. But it's not just about the costumes, I don't just try to look like the character. When I do Indie I try to get his walk, his movements, everything. It wears me out. Sometimes I have to sit down and take a rest."

"It's a show to us," says Zacher, "giving people something to really enjoy. And it keeps our performance juices flowing."

"We're out there putting our heart and soul into this, trying to look good as possible," says Schonberner. "And then you have these guys showing up in store-bought, Halloween costumes."

"The main difference between us and the people who just throw it out there," chimes in Grace, "is that we've studied our characters. And I would never approach anyone as Marilyn, because Marilyn would never have gone up to somebody and said, 'Hey, wanna take my picture?' I tease and flirt and blow kisses."

"Mostly people do give us money [when they take our picture]," says Zacher, "but they do that by themselves; we don't beg. There are some characters who beg for money, and it's normally the ones in the bad, cheap costumes. It's frustrating because we put so much work into it. Like the Grinch. I made that costume from scratch and here comes someone with a cheap, fake mask begging for money. That aggravates me. They don't all behave professionally and you can't control them. There's nobody out there monitoring us or overseeing us, and I wish there was."

"We have a bad reputation because of the pan-handlers so there's automatic discrimination against us."

"It's been a free-for-all out there for the last two years," adds Schonberner.

The likes of Zacher, Grace and Schonberner who do their utmost to give people photo ops actually very worth taking, completely unlike the others who just stand around morosely in dime store masks waiting for a hand-out.

"It's great for us and it's great for fans of the characters," says Zacher, "and that's who we do it for." And their dedication and professionalism has brought other rewards. Zacher features prominently as the star character of various documentaries, featured at the Rotterdam Film Festival and Zacher (as Luke Skywalker) is the main focus of another film, one that probes the effects the 'Star Wars' movies have had on their fans and stars, and for which he was followed by the camera crew for several months (in addition to the other camera crews of four independent documentary films all simultaneously at times). "I had to learn to live on camera," he says. "It actually almost kind of got to me a little at one point. But the chance to – sort of – play some of my favourite characters of all time in a few movies, how could I pass that up?" Zacher also plays a cameo in legendary oddball Dennis Woodruff's latest movie, 'Spaceman', an experience he describes as "Utterly corny and bizarre, but that's what Dennis Woodruff is famous and loved for." And this being Hollywood, that's exactly as it should be.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS ARTICLE WAS NOT ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN ENGLISH, BUT IN PORTGUGESE. I HAD NO ONE TO PROPERLY TRANSLATE THIS FOR ME AT FIRST, SO I HAD TO USE THE AUTO-INTERNET TRANSLATION SYSTEM. Actors Of Hollywood Are Also Heroes OF The Independent Film Circuit

They are the stars of the film that is featured today in the Indie Lisboa Film Festival.  Freddy Krueger explains what it is to be a celebrity impersonator.
Superman enters a bank and paid his account. Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian wait in the street while Luke Skywalker speaks on his cell phone to other film directors. Shrek searches in a bag in his car. It only could happen in Los Angeles?

"There is no way I could do this in my hometown near Chicago, Illinois. People from around the whole world come here to Hollywood to see the stars preferably, but of course, the actual movie & TV actors cannot make it, and therefore, we give this service", says Luke Skywalker, actor Gerard Christian Zacher - who also plays James Dean, Freddy Krueger, Beetlejuice, The Grinch, Peter Pan, and many others.

The impersonators dress as known characters of hit movies, or as classic actors of the American cinema, are all the rage for the Hollywood public. Some are actors working towards being discovered, others are fans. The rest are nothing but beggars damaging the image of the others. But all types are represented in a film for the section 'Director's Cut' of the Indie Lisboa Film Festival, that opens today to 2130 in the Matos Maria. This Festival's theme is a look at diiferent types of heroes. This year, the quick Indie Lisboa Film Festival pays tribute to the three Indie Heroes: Johnnie You and Jose Guerin Luis of the new Rumanian cinema. And Gerard Christian Zacher of this film. Some (the minority, according to Zacher, are struggling actors who strive to be professional actors, but of independent form.

"We are independent, but we hope that won't last too much longer," laughs Zacher, on the telephone long distance. "It is an excellent chance to create our own opportunites. When we get attention and compliments, although the characters are not originally ours, it is still a testament to our talent and hard work - those of who are actually out to be REAL performers, that is," He continues. "I did not originally come here to play characters that are already established by other actors. But, in this area, you really have no choice but to play characters that people already know and love. That's what they come here to Hollywood for. If you aren't a character they recognize from films and television, they won't be the least bit interested in you, no matter how talented you might be in your own right. So, we give them what they want. And I can't lie and say that it isn't great fun! Hard work, yes, but still great fun," says Gerard "Freddy Krueger, James Dean" Zacher.

The dream is the cinema
The career of film maker David started in 1991. Later, the life of Zacher was inspiring to him. Gerard survived a lot of difficulty and challenges in his young life. But he always pulled through in the end. "During the filming of this movie, I had no choice but to depend on the character work to survive for the time being. But everything turned out fine again, eventually. I still do this on and off for the same reason I started it 6 years ago in the first place. It helps me keep in practice with my acting, it's still good training, if treated professionally, and, in a way, it's kind of like a self-appointed internship. Of course, I pursue legitimate acting gigs regularly, but this can increase your chances of getting your work recognized if you do it properly, and if you are good at what you do. "

Zacher is the main star of the movie. He came to Los Angeles to pursue serious goals of film acting. The dream is the cinema. He remembers the exact date he arrived in LA - October 26th. He felt that his life started anew, after a difficult youth and a successful couple of years in Las Vegas, where he started his own theater company and was offered a successful radio show - only to have to give it all up to return to Chicago, Illinois when his father suffered a stroke. Once his father recovered the following year, he reclaimed his own life and moved to Hollywood. After four years working at Disneyland, he remembered seeing the characters on Hollywood Boulevard. "I looked at the scene, and I thought, "There's nobody to stop you from creating your own opportunities." I thought: "If I approached this in a professional manner, this just might lead to bigger things!".

Zacher is also a true chameleon of an actor. "When I arrived, all that were out there so far were spandex super-heroes, a Marilyn Monroe and an Elvis - who were an actual couple, a Chaplin, a Stormtrooper, a winged demon and an Elmo. I thought the scene could use a little more variety of film characters. I wanted to do something really theatrical and spectacular. I made my grand entrance and debut as Bram Stoker's Dracula, which won me instant respect. Later, I realized that doing the same character everyday was limiting, and not enough of a challenge as an actor, and so I decided to show my diversity by adding other characters to my palette. But, like any other talented and wise actor, I chose a lot of characters that I had some things in common with, so that I could play them more convincingly like an actor should."

He chose Luke Skywalker because he related to him in that he, too, grew up without knowing who his biological parents were. He chose Freddy Krueger, the Grinch, and Beetlejuice for the fun of it and for the challenges of learning their various special effects makeup. He chose Peter Pan because he'd played him before in children's theater. And next, he returned to choosing one he had things in common with in James Dean. He knew what it was like to grow up as an outsider. And his portrayal of James Dean is beginning to help him realize his own dreams. He is often sought after by various professional photographers to pose as James Dean for their books and galleries. He's also been approached to play James Dean in a documentary about the lives of 50's celebrity icons.

Gerard also writes, spent his life in theater and radio, he is an artist skilled in illustration and cartooning. And he is also a very popular figure on the internet social media.

"We are a way of contact between the actors who play the characters we represent on film and television and the public. We are a symbol and ambassadors of these actors and their characters, their creators, and the culture of their fans". The city and various studios owners both love and hate them. On the one hand, they give these films and shows free publicity and advertisement, and they know the fans enjoy them. On the other hand, there are those unprofesional beggar-types that use their characters' images in a negative way. "Respect the fans, the actors and the creators of the characters you impersonate. And do them justice by putting real effort into your costumes and performances," says Zacher. As for the city, he says, " They know that if those of us who are prosseional and have high quality costumes and real talent were not there, business would greatly suffer for the entire area. We hold people's interest and attention. If not for us, they would just walk past all the shops and go straight to the hand prints at the Chinese Theater, where they can take pictures of the stars' prints for free. They wouldn't be stopping along the way to even notice the shops and restaurants here. They came here hoping for entertainment and we provide that there everyday. We play a large part in helping this area to flourish."
